OU African Studies and Southeast Asia programs win grants
Ohio University's African Studies and Southeast Asian Studies programs have won Title VI grants from the U.S. Department of Education totaling nearly $3 million over four years. The grants help establish them as national leaders in their respective fields.

Bruce Johnson, formerly the supervisor of the art, music and recreation section of the San Diego Public Library's Central Library, has been named head of the Cleveland Public Library's Main Library.

Library recalling animal toys that contain lead
On Saturday, Aug. 5, State health officials in Indiana issued a consumer health alert for bendable animal toys that were given away at libraries, including at the Greene County Public Library in Ohio, during summer reading programs in June and July.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Homework Express, a twice-a-week, interactive call-in television show broadcast live from Youngstown State University, has been nominated for an Emmy Award by the Cleveland Regional Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

The annual report "News from the Library of Congress: Music and Sound Recordings, 2006" named Ohio University's "Wired for Books" (www.wiredforbooks.org) one of only 10 electronic resources cataloged by the Special Materials Cataloging Division in fiscal year 2005.

As the heat hit triple digits in Athens last week and much of the Midwest, Ohio University Alden Library's air conditioners failed, leaving clients in the library at the mercy of sweltering heat and discomfort.

Ney drops out of race; Padgett says she will run
BREAKING NEWS: COLUMBUS -- U.S. Rep. Bob Ney, under scrutiny in a corruption scandal involving convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff, announced Monday that he was abandoning his re-election campaign. State Sen. Joy Padgett of Coshocton said she would run in his place.

It looks like August 16 will be our only chance in Ohio to catch Harry and the Potters. (And their opening act, Draco and the Malfoys).
Lakewood Public Library, City of Lakewood, Lakewood Jaycees, Cox Communications, and the Lakewood Observer are sponsoring a free concert at the Lakewood Park Bandshell. The group has embarked on their Summer Reading and Rocking Tour 2006. Check out some of their songs on their MySpace page.
